Travis Johnson posted a couple of great thoughts on apprenticing. "You certainly reproduce who you are, not who you want someone else to be." If you're a Point Leader responsible for developing small group leaders, that ought to scare you a little.
Travis Johnson is the lead pastor of Life Pointe Church near Miami. He says this about the Dangers of Apprenticing:
"The scary thing about developing an apprentice is “developing an apprentice.” If you pull it off, there will actually be someone walking around who begins to take on some of your practices and characteristics. When you are developing an apprentice, you have to realize that you will pass on who you are.
If you are weak, timid, and afraid, you will pass on frailty, anxiety, and frightfulness.
If you are prayerful, hope-filled, and aggressive, these are the things you will pass on."
It’s a bit frightening for Point Leaders to encourage small group leaders to reproduce themselves… if the “average” leader is a bit less that perfect… and they all are.
The disciples certainly weren’t perfect, but Jesus told them to reproduce themselves anyway. The model still works.
